Plaiting Techniques: Rim Stitching

In this example, the artist formed a rim with the excess horizontal strips, which are folded around the edge-core bamboo and stitched with finely, split rattan lines. Then the artist dyes his basket in a hot dyebath to give this basket a rich color; then, he applies several coats of "urushi" (natural lacquer) to complete his creation. There are many other ways to form rims.
