The branches of this gracefully spreading tree provide a place for the amusement of birds and animals. At the base, two stunning peacocks with their plumage forming a complete circle stand on a series of small mounds. Each colorful shape is filled with patterns and animals that include elephants, horses and cows. One of the mounds has an inscription that gives the name of the man for whom the Palampore was made. The inscription in Singalese reads, "Vikramratana, Village Headsman of Matara". Matara is a town situated on the southern-most tip of Sri Lanka. It is the only known Palampore identified in this manner.
