Sacred Textile Fragment

Made in Gujarat, carbon dated 1390 - 1454 (ETH-24770)
Collected in Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia
Technique: Block printed, resist and mordant dyed on handspun cotton

Comments: The design shows a woman with a parrot accompanied by a kneeling or sitting woman on either side. The subject of a court lady or courtesan is related to fourteenth century Indian painting. A very similar piece is illustrated in "Woven Cargoes" page 112, plate 146.

Condition: This textile has been patched with pieces of the same textile
Dimensions: 4' 5" x 3' 2 1/2" ( 4.19 x .98 m )
