Tampan / Ceremonial Cloth

Kalianda area, South Sumatra, Indonesia, 19th century

Technique: Supplementary weft, hand-spun silk and cotton

Design: Mirror image design of a dragon-boat with figures, two smaller boats, one with a peacock and one with four figures.

Comment: The use of the mirror image and the use of the two colors make this a unique and visually strong tampan.

Condition: Excellent, mounted (the photo was taken prior to mounting)

Dimensions: 25 1/2" x 27 1/4" ( 0.65 x 0.69 m )
