Tapis Inuh Panel / Ceremonial Garment
Lampong, Sumatra, 19th century

Technique: Silk floss embroidery, mica and flat metal strips on cotton ground

Comment: A procession of tall boats makes its way across the panel representing a ceremonial procession.
Several of the boats have passengers with elaborate headdresses. Many of the boats have pavilions with trees and graceful foliage. An outstanding element of this panel is the embroidery that covers the boats' interiors. These grids of triangles and V shapes are bautifully worked and provide a luxurious depth of decoration rarely seen on tapis. Sparkling mica and pounded flat gold strips add to the overall richness.
