Tapis / Ceremonial Garment
Southwest Sumatra, Kaurer People
19th century
Technique: Brocaded metallic yarns, embroidered silk and metallic yarns, and couched bits on mica.
Comment: An extremely fine example of an old Kauer tapis. Stylized bird figures are woven in silver thread and fluidly drawn ones are embroidered in silk yarns. The banded composition is the ancient and preferred compositional style throughout Indonesia. The metallic thread and the mica provide the bling that balances the more subdued color palette of the ground.
Dimensions: 4' 3" x 3' 11" (1.24 x 1.08 m) mounted
Condition: Good, wear on the metallic thread
