Tampan / Ceremonial Cloth
South Sumatra, Indonesia, 19th century
Click here for: (larger image) (very large closeup)

Technique: Supplementary weft, handspun cotton

Description: A central figure rides what might be an elephant as it has a long trunk. Below the animal is a pair of snakes. At the bottom is the outline of a boat, at the center a form that might be a tree with roots or a creature with outstretched arms. On either side are two small figures and two larger horned animals with long tails. Scrolling motifs fill the background space.

Comment: The intriguing abstraction of this tampan provides a bold and powerful image. The animals and the snake figures dominate the small human figures at the bottom. The central figure, while small, nevertheless commands attention.

Condition: Excellent

Dimensions: 26 1/2" x 26 1/2" ( .67 x .67 m ) mounted
