M'Basa Tali To Batu
"Headcloth of the Stone Man"
Toraja people, Sulawesi
Indonesia, 17th - early 18th century
Click here for: (larger image) (very large closeup)

Technique: A tapestry technique variation - a weft thread is used to bind together small groups (approximately 5 - 8) warp threads. The weft thread continues to bind the same weft thread along the length of the warp. At intervals of 1/2" to 1" a weft thread going from selvage to selvage is put in to hold the textile together. After the weaving was completed the textile was tie-dyed.

Description: Some of the geometric designs formed by the tie-dye are simple variations of colors and others are more complex forming intricate repeat patterns. These follow the traditional Toraja visual scene or mirror images that repeat with part of one image becoming part of the next.

The dating of this is based on another closely related example that was carbon dated.

Condition: Fragmentary

Dimensions: 4' x 9" ( 1.22 x 0.23 m )
